Upload an image to compare compression

File size can increase for an already optimised image. The displayed size and target status describe the actual output.

Upload an image to begin. Most common photo formats are supported.

How to compress an image

  1. Upload your image and compare the original and output previews.
  2. Choose WebP, JPG or PNG. WebP is the default; format conversion is shown explicitly rather than silently changing a PNG to JPG.
  3. Use quality mode for manual control, or enter a target in KB. Target mode tries multiple quality values and reports whether the output actually fits.
  4. Optionally reduce the longest edge, or allow automatic dimension reduction for a smaller target. Dimensions are never reduced by the target search unless that option is enabled.
  5. Review image detail, transparency, dimensions and file size before downloading.

Quality, target size and PNG

JPG and WebP use lossy quality controls; lower quality can remove image detail. Target mode searches within 35% to your chosen maximum quality. If needed and permitted, it also tries smaller dimensions. It is a bounded search, not a guarantee that every image can reach every target. Here 1 KB means 1024 bytes.

PNG uses lossless encoding of the rendered pixels and has no useful browser quality slider. Its file size may not decrease without changing dimensions or switching format. Already-optimised images can also become larger after re-encoding; the tool reports this rather than showing a false saving.

Supported image uploads

JPG/JPEG/JFIF, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and self-contained static SVG are decoded when supported by your browser. File contents are checked rather than trusting only the MIME label, so many phone files with empty or incorrect type labels can still open. GIF and multi-image files are exported as a still image, not an animation.

HEIC/HEIF first tries browser decoding, then a public local HEIC decoder loaded on demand. Its first use needs internet, and some newer HEIC codec variants may still fail. TIFF, RAW and PSD are not supported: export them as PNG/JPG first. No browser tool can honestly guarantee every image codec. Damaged files show an error without trapping you in the upload screen.

Transparency and privacy

PNG/WebP can preserve transparent areas. JPG cannot: it uses the selected fill colour, with white as the default, to prevent transparent areas becoming black. Compression does not repair blur or create missing detail.

Images are processed locally in your browser. This tool does not upload image files; original site analytics, advertising and remote resources remain. Camera orientation is handled by supported browsers, while output does not copy source EXIF/GPS metadata. Processing always starts from the prepared source image rather than repeatedly compressing the previous result. This version supports one image at a time, up to 30 MB. Large photos are automatically prepared at up to 4096 pixels on the longest side and 12.6 MP for browser memory safety. Original and working dimensions are displayed; this safety preparation applies even when target-size resizing is off.
